Watching Mateen warm up in the pre dawn mist, I exclaimed to Tom Durkin, and my wife Sarah Joy, (and anyone else who would listen, "We made it!"
"With every practice lap, he is justifying our practice, our perseverance, and the plethora of pre-paid passes!"
After pre-riding the course on the day before his Junior 17-18 Juniors' race, Mateen Richey said with some wide eyed concern, "it's a hard course!"
Mud teaches many lessons.
Seventy young men from all over The Nation brought their bicycles to Tacoma Washington on Sunday December 15th to face the mud, and each other in the 2019 United States Cyclocross Championship, and no one rode away unchanged.

Called up to the start line in 69th place, Mateen had a plan.

He knew his one advantage at the back
was a clear view of the whole pack in front of him. Mateen's plan was to watch for congestion early, and try to go around.
He figured, if he could find a clear line early, he could establish a good position to chase the front runners.

When the race began, the pace was very fast. It was all he could do to hold his position, until congestion came upon the set up corner to the big muddy run up. This was the early congestion he was looking for. When suddenly twenty people bogged down almost to a stop Mateen went around the outside out into the tape.
A HS track 200m hurdler, Mateen powered to the front of this immediate cluster of riders. Now he was in the low forties. But soon a hard hop-on remount broke his seat adjustment bolt and his saddle was all over the place.
Running into the pit, he found three men waiting including Denzel, Bob Grummel, and his father Mikail, were all waiting to hand him a new bike.

By this time however, all the wrestling around the broken saddle had done its damage to his position in the race. After the bike swap, Mateen fought to hold on and ended up racing near other familiar Oregon riders, but never to surge past 50th again. Finishing 56th and not being lapped were his victories in his first Cross Nationals.
Racing hard, Mateen saw it as a good race because he came in thirteen places improved.
Finishing amidst other well known Oregon riders just four seconds behind Jackson Loftus and ahead of Tigard's Tyger Westerfield it was a familiar finish.

Benefits of going to Nationals included a new strength found. A humbled realization, and an elegant sense of self initialized. Parents and family were drawn together and encouraged. When Mateen Richey
was a child,
we marveled
at his ability to stay motivated
and keep his bicycle upright in chaos.
Kids on Bikes activities at Blazer Boys and Girls Club put cyclists all around him and in his way.
His goal was to not to dap (put his foot down.)
As an 8 year old, he was a master. (see 8 yr old here)

Mateen always rode his bicycle in silence, and with a smile.

Unfortunately, we lost track of him for a spell. A few years.
Chaos had been no stranger in his young life.

A cacophonous parental divorce charged the tenor of his upbringing. Young parents in poverty were challenged to despair.
Everyone in Mateen's family love him and help him. They all want the best for this young star.
It was time of rest and recovery. As well as gentle recovery in an intellectual setting.

Grandpa's level of support allowed Mateen to attend his first year of HS at about 75% consistency, and periodic school security escorts to the principle's office.
This time in life allowed Mateen to nearly live at the Mt. Scott Community Center, playing basketball.

Swimming is a big part of Bicycles and Ideas for Kids' Empowerment, and on one of trips to the pool, we spotted Mateen. We swam at Mt. Scott Pool where he played pick-up basketball.
Now over five feet tall, Mateen was attending high school in his Freshman year. Miraculously in this same week, one of b.i.k.e.'s most famous volunteers met Mateen's Math Teacher in a bar.

b.i.k.e. was given the private cell number of the very teacher who had to call the school security. When I called and introduced myself, we only spoke of general programming ideas at first. But soon, I revealed I had a kid in our program that might be in his class. When I said the child's name the math teacher gasped with astonishment. This was one of the kids he had been having the trouble with.

Next thing you knew, we were all out to dinner sharing a meal. (see here)

One thing led to another, and a Stanford Phd. Mathematician named Study Buddy J got on Skype with Mateen. With a Math tutor, Mateen was transformed. His math class under the watchful eye of his math teacher, became a study skills laboratory. Improvement in math study skills steadily transformed Mateen's approach to his entire class load. Last term Mateen received a 3.5 gpa.

Mateen has been thinking lately he might study to become a CPA like his brother in The Lore of Cyclisme, Stephen Bedford.

Behavior in a young person's life, is the currency with which they purchase opportunity. Whether they are being cool amongst their peers, or being responsible amongst adults, their choices how to move and breathe manifest their lot in life.
Back in the day when his high school age mentors from the Cyclisme racing program announced he was their pick from the Blazer Boys and Girls Club Kids on Bikes Program pool of talent. Back in 2013, he just smiled. He hardly speaks a word to this day. And today, he wins bicycle races in a variety of disciplines.

Caring teammates have been the key to Mateen's success. He rides with children and adults and practices Cyclisme's four edicts of championship: benevolence, good form, simplicity and team.
Reaching for Championship
is no small task, but Mateen and Maurice
are "all in!"

Racing at Portland International Raceway in the free Juniors category, they found victory in different ways.

Diverse and friendly this venue was the perfect place to bring Maurice (11) and Mateen (16) Richey.

OBRA Official, and race announcer, Luciano Bailey, an Italian, African American from Back East, is a veteran of the Cyclisme Lore, and an alert defender of the faces of color making entre into the peloton.

He knew just what to do when a fast talking maurice wanted to explain his way out of staying on the wheel of the kid his age off the back, Lucci pedalled bye and stuck out his arm for a friendly high speed madison push on the back of the 11 year old nabob of negativism.

Meanwhile, at the front of the pack, older brother Mateen was matching wits with the full might of the Dialed Racing Junior Program. Refusing to pull through, they would attack en masse, the moment he pulled too long.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-29952291869782441522019-04-28T17:36:00.001-07:002019-05-15T12:09:34.267-07:00West to home! Westerholm steamrolled.
Starting the 2019 road season at Jack Frost in March, is a cold proposition. This year was better than some, as at least the sun came out.

Mateen Richey rolled out onto the 12 mile course with the 17-18 year olds, as he is sixteen now and that is how OBRA works. He will race as an 18 year old when CX rolls around.

Featuring a tentative fit on an old school funny bike with an old school aero helmet, his signature in a wind tunnel test would have been plenty modern. Mateen Richey won at the NINKROSSI cyclocross race in the 17-18yr. division.
In Rainy conditions, Mateen shot off the front for a huge 30second gap, then gently let some of it go to come in first.

In his first year of CX racing it was an incredible accomplishment.

After winter training with the adults of Cyclisme, then track racing in the Junior schedule, Mateen hopped on a custom made Igleheart CX frame (see here) and excelled.

Mateen's cross strategy for 2018 was to race in the JCS Series and the Portland Trophy Cup, before the State Champs in November.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com4tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-64532452219112499832018-09-14T18:31:00.003-07:002018-09-14T19:38:16.396-07:00Rare achievment!

Oregon cycling
features brilliant cycling people.
From the urban commuters, to the open road adventure tourists.
From the mountain bikers to the throngs of cyclocross racers.
Portland Oregon's cycling scene is strong and vibrant. Full of inspiration and culture. Energy is everywhere.
Honoring the opportunity of this moment in their community, three youth made a rare choice and a rare achievement; they got ready with others, they raced the local best, and they won.

Thanks to a moment when all the bikes arrived and fit, the right races were chosen after the training with the team had demanded so much.

A Junior cyclist navigating in the OBRA racing peloton is competing against 91 other teams in 5 different disciplines featuring over a hundred different racing events. In any of them, racers must be skilled and fast.
Competitive Elite discipline in a team environment fosters survival in the pack.
Certainly racing on the steep banks of Alpennose Velodrome, Elite Juniors must be prepared and alert.
Elite Juniors need good road bikes, tt bikes, track bikes, mtn. bikes, cross bikes and second bikes to keep the racing bikes ready. It's mind boggling to visualize Junior Elite Racers in Oregon today.
Sharpening the edge of true Championship requires time, treasure, and a rolling enclosure of sport.
"Sharpening the edge," requires a special environment. No place does that rolling enclosure have conducive architecture like the velodrome, but the real competition in Oregon is in Cyclocross. Go figure.

Family and friends create this rolling enclosure, around the calendar, with their strength and support. In the early winter, the training Team Ride forms out on the open road.
Bicycles and Ideas for Kids' Empowerment teams up with local adult Cyclisme riders share strength and sensibility as we raise children up in the paceline on the open road. For example, starting in January of 2018, a crew of adults helped Mateen Richey get his base miles riding around Troutdale Airport.
There he found and revealed his very fast 500m sprint. Revelation of potential realized. Application would soon gain accolades

For the first time in his three year career, Joshua Morris fell into a strong comfortable aero position. On a home-made funny-bike, he won at the 2018 season opener, Jack Frost Time Trial. The first race of the season starting with a victory, was a new achievement for Joshua.
The achievement gave Joshua the confidence he needed to attack the discipline of mass start road racing. Finishing 5th at Piece of Cake was in Joshua's mind, like winning the National Championship.

Also at Piece of Cake road race we met a Lincoln HS Junior racing in the Men's cat 4/5s.
Tasman Alexander was a Junior at Lincoln HS in downtown Portland who would eventually lead our Junior Team through the track season to Six OBRA Track Championships.
Tasman arrived to our program hungry for miles, races, and well.. more!
Known in Cyclisme racing programs for his exploit chasing Chuck Westerholm through the Bull Run Valley, Tasman peddled out a 130 miles on that day and gave Chuck a run for his money. (something few of Chuck's team mates had been able to do previously)
Tasman moved lock step into the regime of track racing being pursued by Joshua and Mateen during the early Summer. Thanks to Tom Orth, they were enjoying Tuesday Nights at the PVC TT's and Pursuits.

They became a team and raced as A Team.
When the end of summer, OBRA Junior Track Camp arrived, and the OBRA Junior Track Championships were raced, the three youth revealed their hours of training, and team dynamic. After weeks of winning races and taking their premier position in the Junior Track Peloton they raced their first races with the Cat 3/4/5 Men.

In a recent Scratch race, 12 year old Joshua attacked from the start and got a surprising half lap gap. Whomever chased him down in the panic got a wily pursuer in Mateen. He took on any fight with full vigor, but only after a period of pulling up track with all the now-tired pursuers of Joshua. This helped Joshua to get back on and recover.
When the race took off again in earnest, Mateen was on the wheel of all attackers, and taking only half lap pulls. Finally as the finish line arrived, Tasman was in the sprint for a narrow 2nd place. The men were flabbergasted.

"Your kids are looking good John," they said with heads down, dejected.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-88679402050243691632018-07-15T20:26:00.001-07:002018-07-20T13:12:40.248-07:00Tuesday Night Show
Traditionally the Masters/Juniors Individual Time Trial Night, the 2018 Portland Velodrome Committee authorized Tuesday Night Time Trials, Pursuits and Junior Scratch Races for a Junior Track Cup Series.

Typically the least attended race night on the Summer Track Calendar, promoters offered Scratch racing to create another pipeline of development to Mass Start Racing. Authorities felt Masters were not interested in Scratch Racing. 2018 Promoters dutifully acquiesced, despite months of promotion.
Despite the loss of Masters Scratch racing in 2018 on Tuesday Nights at Alpenrose Velodrome, spirits soared with a surprise visit from Five Time National Champion Zak Kovalcik who came out to see how we do, (and show us how it is done with a casual 36.47 in the 500m)

Kovalcik a long time bicycle messenger rose from the beginning ranks to reach the very highest levels of international racing. Famous for wild last minute, come from behind chases, he is considered to be one of the gutsiest endurance track racers in America today.
Laughing so loud, one could hear his location up on the track wall, hidden in the porta potty, or even from way up in the parking lot. His charisma was firing up all sectors of the promotion.
He even stopped to help juniors fix their bikes!

Zak seemed to be thrilled to be back. He was back where Coaches like Brian Abers had made a big difference in his life. (see here)

Elder High School age teenagers like Kent Ross, ran the program and could spot the young talent easily. As little children, Josh and Mateen loved to ride their bikes, and it was apparent. (see Mateen coached by Kent here)
Very little has changed. Despite their super motivation, Joshua and Mateen's training regime, and developmental arch has been kept gentle by some standards. Josh and Mateen's coaching staff decided to limit their racing to the individual OBRA events. Growing their big time race savvy slowly, they stayed safe and motivated.
Pack racing was practiced in team practices. Fun little races kept the key lessons coming.
Individual Time trials don't teach a ton of pack savvy, but they improve power and legspeed. More importantly, they teach one how to handle themselves in the parking lot, and at the registration table.

Once the Individual Time Trial racing was learned, they were transformed to stronger students of speed. They were ready to graduate to higher challenges. Our velodrome was the perfect University.
Alpenrose Velodrome can be a daunting spectacle for new comers, but our Juniors who practice mass start events on Saturday evenings, are familiar. Having raced publicly only as individuals, until recently, our Juniors were finally ready to not crash out the whole pack.

The OBRA Junior Track Camp, promoted for OBRA by the team PDX Devo, was a perfect place to enter the public eye in Track Racing. After months of road riding and easy gear (72 inch) track practices, Cyclisme ramped them up quickly over four weeks to larger gears. ( 76, 81, 84 inches )

When Josh and Mateen stepped out to participate in the OBRA Jr. camp, their results were top notch.
Great Coaches made quick use of their skills as examples.

Making friends and riding at the front, our guys were well prepared for the foray into pack racing and public life.
Our guys spent all their strength to learn new tricks at the camp, then entered their first Thursday/Friday mass start events.
There Mateen reunited with his old coach Kent Ross, now an ex National Collegiate Champ.
Then the next day, Josh and Mateen entered the Blue Ribbon weekend track omnium promoted for OBRA by Coach Phil Saunders of the team, BBC, and WON STUFF!

Tired, but fast enough. Life is good,
Aerodynamics play a big role in cycling, but especially the Individual Time Trial!
The Oregon State Champs on the road side of this event showcased just the kind of warm windy open roads that require strict attention to aerodynamics.
Hard work however, plays the biggest role of all.

Joshua Morris has been working on is aerodynamic position for years. This year he pedals while in the aero bars, pretty fast, comfortably. Hard work is paying off.

Mateen Richey is just starting his individual TT career, yet in his first TT State Championship, he was called to the podium to receive the Bronze Medal.

Suffering hard work in training payed off in racing. We are happy about it.

After the race in Brownsville, Oregon in the morning, training continued. Moving north toward home, we stopped to swim at the Dallas Aquatic Center. Then we had a half kilometer running race, that Sarah Benenate won barefoot.
But, some scary fast descending right at the beginning, shaped the group dynamics along the long windy, subtle grade of the rural ascent back to the finish complex in Hubbard.
Two groups organized after a split along age divisions on the early descent.

On the descent, Joshua fell back to the second group and organized a paceline. At the finish line Joshua sprinted the gruppetto for a close second. Sixth place over all. A score in the OBRA JUNIOR BAR.
Because of some strong moves, and apparent character, Joshua earned a lot of respect out on the road. He made fast friends in the parking lot too.
Fatigue was not a big deal after for the 12 (almost 13) year old after the 13 mile event. He even road a couple of miles after the race to cool down, and find a nice dry spot to do yoga.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-29890022499983016112018-03-15T21:17:00.002-07:002018-04-04T14:00:41.484-07:00Joshua Morris Debuts

In life, what we have accomplished seems to shape who we are. Who we train with and how we train helps us create what we want in life. It gives us the resources and the direction we need.

Joshua Morris wants to be strong and helpful to his family. He also loves to laugh and play and have fun. Growing up, after years of attending individual Time Trials, Joshua finally won this locally famous Season Opener Jack Frost TT in the grandest style - by over two minutes.

This totality of strength, form and charisma arrives following years of hard fought victories at best. But this year, early season training, often in the rain, led to a strong and confident performance in a healthy field.
Rain or shine, the Saturday ride ritual has been a social staple for Joshua over the years. Moreover, a two time Champ of the Oregon TT Cup, entry level as it is, Joshua was made ready finally, to demonstrate journeyman prowess at JF.

Joshua's training has been multifaceted. He has spent quite a bit of time out on the Alpenrose velodrome. Two years ago he attended the OBRA Track Camp introduced by Stephen Beardsley (see here)

In the Lore of Cyclisme, Joshua is connected to a pantheon of luminaries, especially in and around the Boys and Girls Clubs utilizing our special ops mentorship unit: The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.

It was their programming of "Roller's 101" that discovered Joshua Morris years ago. While the original Four are pictured below, it was the work of four who followed, that perfected the programming at Blazer Boys & Girls (please see the ordered chaos here)
Last Sunday's ride from Troutdale marked a milestone in the Lore of Cyclisme Racing Programs.
For over three decades, the Sandy river valley has influenced our bicycle racing program.
Last Sunday the road to Lolo put a man on our Barlow trail, who was a much stronger rider than we bargained for.

Cyclisme Racing programs attempt to mind the wind in pacelines with benevolence, good form, simplicity and team.
Rolling up stream on the Sandy river we always try to offer a draft to the people we fly up upon the road.
It's not easy pull off though.
Typically the car in the lead approaches the unwary lead cyclist first. That is what happend to Chuck.
Well balanced, and resilient high school graduates are the holy grail of parents and teachers alike. But a child's personal choices are the specter of unknown probability in our search for quality citizenry.

Many would say, "all youth are at risk today, and not just those living in the inner city." Drugs, violence, crime, and video game lethargy are but a few of the modern phenomena that invade the idle moments of a young person's life. There are no guarantees that a perfectly balanced, well adjusted person won't make a bad choice.

When we think back over our lives, how many gifted and talented children with kind parents, from privileged backgrounds have gone out into the world and made catastrophic choices?

Some people however, learn to transcend their set-backs in life. You knock em down, they get up. You lock em up, and they get out to become President of their country. Some people become highfalutin celebrities, but stay grounded, and humble. What is that? Why do they choose the way they do?
I don't know.

But I do know...
Bicycle riding improves the statistics.
Bicycle riding puts the young perspective on the happy side of life. The hopeful side of life. And it adds the well received patina of aerobic athleticism to a young person's attributes. Energy to perform easily, as well as societal good looks for others to shape their impressions, give a teenager confidence.

Bicycles teach best life practices through discipline and freedom.
Kids pedal through their anger, and frustration, but are restricted to good form by their pedals' crank arm length.
Goals are like bicycle driven destinations, there is just no way to get out of powering up the watts required to travel the distance to the desired destination.

In twenty five years of coaching bicycle racing, I have come to believe laughter is one sign of something good going on. Interspersed with episodes of extreme oxygen debt, the laughter helps shape a good strong person. Compassion is one outcome that deep breathing and team work, when combined, seem to promote.

A bicycle's pedal stroke is also an excellent coach of Good Form as a concept. Regular Saturday practices with the Team are an excellent coach of Benevolence and friendship.

One of our students challenged by our weekly team ride is 16 year old Tristan Young, of Beaverton, Oregon. Tristan arrived with a passion for cycling, but without much of an outlet. Tristan is challenged by traffic filled roads, and by his learning style. Tristan has Autism. Today Tristan rides in a paceline with others in traffic, and competes in Oregon Bicycle Racing Association events. He became the Oregon Cup Individual Time Trial Champ for his age division in 2016.

Tristan says, "It's hard to focus when I really just want to do some thing, but then I remember i have to listen." Tristan adds in regard to cycling practice, "little things bother me when I am out and about during Practice."
He lists: "if my bike is not working like I want it to, or my mom wants me to put on sunscreen, or there is too much going on in the pack on the street, it bothers me."

Tristan takes this weekend challenge on, recovers, and is strengthened for daily life at his high school during the week. Of late, Tristan has been "mainstreamed" and gets his education in regular public school class rooms.

Tristan needs a village. Cycling has given Tristan and the other children on his team a safe social circle to perform in.
For example, Tristan's efforts have been noticed by caring adults in the cycling world. People in the Portland area like Bob Mionskie who rode for the National Team, and Dave Guettler, Owner of River City Bicycles, have come together to level Tristan's playing field by supplying him with professional equipment to pursue his goals. For kids like Tristan the bicycle is more than just a toy. The bicycle is a passport to a language of laughter describing what happiness feels like. His bicycle offers a vision of how he wants to shape his happiness with the help of others. Simply his bicycle clues him in on how much strength is required to get there. The bicycle is his passport, his teacher, and his friend.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-52252271959502854102017-09-05T09:38:00.002-07:002017-09-27T13:09:33.639-07:00Secret TeamWE GOT READY WHEN WE GOT READY

Arrival at the confidence, speed, and prowess required for a bike racer to train well, is elusive. Racing safely is predicated on the success of training.

How do cyclists get to be race ready?

In part, the requirement is clear goal declaration. By stating out-loud to others that we want to be fast, and maybe win the State Champs at that, is how we get locked in to our goals.

Clearly stated goals help others to get involved in a positive way.

New Talent get a lot of misleading information from other good looking - seemingly accomplished competitors who talk loud and fast with nebulous, if not destructive intentions.
Racers find a clear path from a trusted coach. Using honest and knowledgable feed-back is a sure way to add depth and clarity to the goal-oriented racer's training path.

However, coaches are challenged by beginners who don't know yet what their options are for goal making.
Coaches suggest the options, but racers must hear the voice of wisdom.
Sometimes a new person who in the moment wants to be in our practice, will then in the next week wax unsure.

Ironically, confidence comes most easily from the crowd. The team dynamic.

This year our team had many of the same building blocks as so many successful Cyclisme teams in years before.
They enjoyed a "Rocky Rabbit" traditional winter road ride promoted weekly, so a larger group could train together working on the general tactics of road racing. But this year, finding a quorum of participants who had the confidence and clarity to show up week after week, without break for 6-10 weeks, was impossible.

Cobbled together with intermittent appearances, the group improved anyway. Maybe not at the rate the most competitive OBRA Teams do, but small improvement for some was more encouraging and useful than for others.
Finally, near the end of 2017, some of the interested found a place to showcase their improvement in racing's "low lying fruit" individual TT competitions out at the velodrome called "PVC TT's" on Tuesday Nights. Low and behold, they even found some old Cyclisme Leadership out there, waiting ready to serve.
Dan Dubble D Dhonau had been honing his individual TT program for more than a few years. When our 2017 graduates of the Winter Program arrived as a gaggle at Alpenrose Velodrome, Dubble D looked up, smiled, and decided to really train. He made a voiced goal.
His clarity led our success. And though we got ready to race about the time the racing season was over, at least we got ready.

The preparation will only prepare us for next year.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-4362824015984117802017-08-20T20:49:00.001-07:002018-02-05T21:17:35.101-08:00Man on a Mission
In reality, juggling life and work, it's overwhelming to try and improve your performance a lot on a bike.
In a fluid, ego-maniacal environment that begs to be pure chaos, Dan organized it by example in one fell swoop.

Attacking into the whistle in the first lap, Dan pulled up track in corner 3, and fell into about 5th easily. (or, as easily as possible while going fast as you can - see above - click on picture)
In the most elder age categories, the main season calendar can offer slim pickins. Folks either end up racing people half their age or they end up racing small fields with dismal competition. But at the Master State Championships, the fields are high class and exciting.

Rob Waldman raced his first match sprint of his career against two national medalists. It wasn't pretty, but Rob "The Durango Kid" Waldman endured for a bronze medal. Now he is the one of the top Match Sprinters in the 65+ age division of Oregon.
Rob's debut was supported by his team with rollers and a tent, food, water, and coffee. The coach and his wife as well as a variety of coaches who gathered t the side of his coach as a veritable coaching staff.
Two of note were John and Cyclisme's original assistant Coach, back in the nineties, Jerry Powell, and National Team retiree, Brad Gephard.
Also helpful, Rob's somewhat more experienced team-mate Dan "Double D" Dhonau went forth with him representing the "newer guys" in the face of an all star cast of Oregon's oldest.
Big, late race moves seemed to be the product of a deep reservoir of determination, as well as the second week using easier gears .
Going out hot with an easier gear invited us to try and catch the opponent off guard, Cyclisme racers spun out, or even blew up tired, but then still tried with legspeed again to recovered the lost ground - or even reclaim victory, was WORD RCB style of the night!. Master's National Champions show up, participate in the racing, then turn triumphantly to teach our children to hold their arms straight in their start.

Of course, we know I emphasize a more dynamic approach to the arm bend. Please (see Sir Hoy START)

But of course, on this night, no one is doing it right, even the Master's National Champ does it wrong as he misses the cadence on the last beep.

Meanwhile some of our guys, in their nervousness take the opportunity to throw everything they have learned out the window. Oy, vay! What can you do? It's all part and parcel of being a brand new beginner track cyclist in an entry level amateur setting.

Electronic timing is officiated by the promoter as a loudspeaker beeps out the rhythm of the start. Getting in the rhythm of the beeps is fundamental.
Some racers shout a big roar as they step into the first powerful strokes of their pedals.
Putting the left pedal parallel to the ground, the down hill slope of the track pushes against the first downward thrust. Like a keel and a sail, they create forward motion.

Pedal position, arm position, roar and legspeed can all be seen done well in fifty eight seconds of Chris Hoy's KILO (see here)

Controversarians on the sidelines question legspeed when a gear is too easy, only to have another young racer's Start be aborted for fear of the bigger gear's impossibility. Meanwhile, the child's limited attention was merely being borrowed briefly from the grasp of the nearest video game or text message.
Public settings provide critics of motion who care little for the origins of the athlete's beginning. Voyeurs only respond to what they see today, but their ravenous appetite for an audience washes over the topography, creating a fluid mind bending challenge to the beginning sports psychology.
For the beginner, the truth of the TIME PIECE is counterbalanced by the distraction of the racing community. A Public Setting provides scrutiny even if not
much competition. A public setting provides testing challenges in a more dynamic social milieu.

Looking at the paceline picture above top and commenting in order of appearance from front to back, I'll say... Rob Waldman and Sarah Joy Benenate, came from the Sunday Ride and Oregon Cup TT road events.
Double D is a veteran track medalist of Cyclisme Lore.
Cliff Theissen is a motorcycle motocrosser who came to Cycling and Cyclisme a few years ago, and has really taken to Match Sprinting on Friday Nights. Tim Connelly is a Master Racer who is making his second run at amateur cycling, now that the family is raised and out of the house.kidsofbikehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12517340391630260658noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-400717627056181141.post-13516698277451772652017-06-29T13:26:00.001-07:002017-07-14T10:40:00.048-07:00Beginners in Pursuit of Captains!

It takes a village.

Tuesday Nights at Alpenrose Velodrome feature easier endurance events like the Pursuit and the Individual Time Trial.

Verily, it's a great space to engage the beginner, then get them matched up with more experienced team mates.

Recently our Mike Heywood rode 2k in 03:03.29.
While the week before that, a Mile passed under the wheels of our Dan Dhonau (back right above) in just 2:34:01.
These sorts of longer intervals make people fast, quickly.

With our tent, snacks, and stationary rollers (by themselves, a training event), as well as camp chairs and camaraderie, we are making the scene slick on Tuesday Nights.
Many people practice speed with long rides on the road. A few more thoughtful specialists break their speed down into short blasts. But only a few practice the brutal and discouraging FIVE MINUTE INTERVAL.
Five minute intervals are for elite athletes. Folks like Mark Cavendish, Bradley Wiggins or Coryn Rivera work these "pursuit" intervals. At the elite levels, five minutes means about 4 kilometers.

Last Tuesday night at the Alpenrose Velodrome, three Cyclisme racers turned in efforts for
The Green and Black. Sarah Joy Miller, Rob

Double D is a long time leader of Word RCB byCyclisme racing program out on the Alpenrose velodrome. When our new racers arrived on the recent Tuesday Night, they were encouraged to see Dan "Double D" Dhonau ready to go fast in full aero regalia.
Dan, a motorcycle mechanic for Harley Davidson played a pivitol role at the 2011 Nationals when Jake Hansen was having trouble turning in good times in the Omnium.
Jake's cone bearings on his rear wheel had been over tightened and were presenting huge drag on his speed.
Dan discovered and repaired the problem, and Jake went on to win two National Medals.
