The Big Show!

Cross Nationals
Watching Mateen warm up in the pre dawn mist, I exclaimed to Tom Durkin, and my wife Sarah Joy, (and anyone else who would listen, "We made it!"
"With every practice lap, he is justifying our practice, our perseverance, and the plethora of pre-paid passes!"

It was such a thrill to be at the raceside, in Fort Steilacoom Park. Arriving rested and ready, we remembered business leaders like, Holly Bussmus (see here), Steve Martine (see here),  Bob Mionskie (see here), Bob Grummel (see here), and Dave Guettler (see here) came together and supported a local HS student's dream.

After pre-riding the course on the day before his Junior 17-18 Juniors' race, Mateen Richey said with some wide eyed concern, "it's a hard course!"
Intimidating slopes.

Mud teaches many lessons.
Seventy young men from all over The Nation brought their bicycles to Tacoma Washington on Sunday December 15th to face the mud, and each other in the 2019 United States Cyclocross Championship, and no one rode away unchanged.

Called up to the start line in 69th place, Mateen had a plan.

He knew his one advantage at the back
was a clear view of the whole pack in front of him.  Mateen's plan was to watch for congestion early, and try to go around.
He figured, if he could find a clear line early, he could establish a good position to chase the front runners.
tire inspection

When the race began, the pace was very fast. It was all he could do to hold his position, until congestion came upon the set up corner to the big muddy run up. This was the early congestion he was looking for. When suddenly twenty people bogged down almost to a stop Mateen went around the outside out into the tape.

Tiring depths.
A HS track 200m hurdler, Mateen powered to the front of this immediate cluster of riders.  Now he was in the low forties. But soon a hard hop-on remount broke his seat adjustment bolt and his saddle was all over the place.
Running into the pit, he found three men waiting including Denzel, Bob Grummel,  and his father Mikail, were all waiting to hand him a new bike.

By this time however, all the wrestling around the broken saddle had done its damage to his position in the race. After the bike swap, Mateen fought to hold on and ended up racing near other familiar Oregon riders, but never to surge past 50th again. Finishing 56th and not being lapped were his victories in his first Cross Nationals.

Mateen was in a fight amongst the back 30. Racing hard, Mateen saw it as a good race because he came in thirteen places improved.
Finishing amidst other well known Oregon riders just four seconds behind Jackson Loftus and ahead of Tigard's Tyger Westerfield it was a familiar finish.

Benefits of going to Nationals included a new strength found. A humbled realization, and an elegant sense of self initialized. Parents and family were drawn together and encouraged. Our foundation is in place to improve in 2020.

Cross Crusade at PIR

BLOOD, MUD, and GLORY
by
GO

Jeff shows his battle wound after the Master's B melee. We have quite the team knee bleeding thing going on these days!

Keegan, Esteban and DeyShaun all raced very well in the Juniors Cyclocross Series race at the PIR Cross Crusade. It was a true mud-fest. Here are Keegan and DeyShaun dismounting before the barriers on the run-up.

We had some sunbreaks, and Danny O'Brien found a rainbow to take a picture of.

Here are Esteban and DeyShaun negotiating the final sloppy turn before the paved finishing straightaway.

Mudslinger 2010, by Greg

The boys got off to a hot start, with Naiqwan jumping out with the holeshot and DeyShaun grabbing his wheel. Naiqwan soon dropped his chain and got passed by his entire field. He fixed the chain, caught back on, attacked again and won by almost 10 minutes.

One of the early sections called for a dismount for most racers.

There was a super slippery downhill section at the end of the Panama trail. You can see from DeyShaun's expression that this MTB stuff is pretty fun!

Here's how the day ended, not too shabby! The young man Naiqwan is on a tear, and ready to take on the Cat 2's. Photos courtesy of Mudslinger Events and Shane Young/oregonvelo.com

Horning's Hustle

A First for Hana!
by
Greg O'Brien

Jake, Jeff, Naiqwan and I headed out Sunday morning to Horning's Hideout for the 2010 edition of the Hustle MTB race. Jake's victory on Saturday at the Kings Valley road race had us all pumped up. We met Catherine "Hana" Cooper at the race for her Cyclisme debut mountain bike race.

There was much getting ready and squeezing of tires to get the pressure dialed in for the somewhat muddy descents.

The start was staged out by category and age. Jake, being the young, fast cat 1 dude started in one of the first groups. Jeff started in the group ahead of me, and Naiqwan and Catherine were both in groups after mine.

After a fast downhill gravel road section, the course turns uphill on a gravel road, with grades close to 20%. We then turned left onto a more primitive dirt path before topping out and a brief gravel descent before hitting the first somewhat slick downhill. Jake ran into some trouble here and went down hard at speed. He said that he straightened out the bars and kept going, but fell once more before calling it a day after the first of 4 laps. He ended up with a gnarly cut-up knee.

Jeff was having a great race, but when I saw him walking down as I was climbing on the 3rd lap I knew it was bad news. His rear derailleur got mangled and broke off the hanger, ending his race. I managed to stay upright and finished the 3 lap cat 2 45-54 field in 8th place (same placing as Echo!). I was regretting forgetting my Camelback as I was starting to cramp up about 20 minutes from the end. 1 water bottle wasn't enough for me...

Naiqwan rode a good, smart race. He crashed but didn't let it rattle his concentration. He finished in 3rd place, and looked great on the bike. The course had some steep slippery downhills with water bars, and a couple of really steep slippery climbs as well.

The story of the day was Hana, who took first in the cat 3 women 35-44 age group race! She also won a killer pair of Oakleys in the raffle. Jeff thought he won a Chris king headset, but only got some coffee and beer instead...

Yoga in the Woods

Yep, you got it. Here's DeyShaun working the kinks out while on a little break from the trail.

University Falls, in the Tillamook Burn area.

Hana, Naiqwan, Jeff, DeyShaun and I rode the "Historic Hiking Trail" loop in the Tillamook State Forest last weekend. It's a fun, challenging loop, especially when it's a bit wet.

Krugers Crossing 11-22-09, by Greg

I'm pretty humble and soft spoken, so my Krugers race report summary may seem out of character...

Greg and Eric put a beat-down on the Mens Master B 35+ field!

1st Place, Eric Lanners
2nd Place, Greg O'Brien

I discussed strategy with Eric before the race, and I was to not kill it the first lap, to try and have some strength to finish hard, hopefully together with Eric.

Well, I got a good start, grabbed the holeshot, and when I looked back a few minutes later it was just me an unlucky #787 with a sizable gap to the chasers. 787 passed me before the barriers, but I passed him back when he had tire trouble a bit later in the first lap.

I held a good gap for the next lap, crashing once but recovered pretty quickly. Passing through the line after lap 2 Luciano announced that it was now a Cyclisme Team Time Trial, with Eric coming up on me. Eric passed, I dangled back a little bit but was able to hold on to 2nd comfortably.

I hope I can hold some good strength for the 2 days of the USGP at PIR. This has been my best cyclocross season so far, and remarkably is going the way I planned it, which is to be peak near the end.

Dave Wingard, DeyShaun and Naiqwan and Aurbey also all had good races. Pictures are from Jim Long and richtheneighbor. Aubrey raced a fixed gear CX bike! No pics of him yet.

Cross Crusade #8 Barton 11-15-09, by Greg

Cross Crusade grand finale at Barton Park.
Mens Master B 35+:
3rd Greg
6th Eric Lanners

Mens C:
87th Aubrey Edwards

Mens Juniors:
9th Naiqwan Pelman
12th DeyShaun Lee

Jeff Gerwing raced but double flatted. Mike Mann also flatted. Dave Wingard raced (I think), but can't find a result.

Dave definitely took some good pics, they are here.

These pics are from Will Cortez. I'm happy, as a podium spot at a Crusade race has been a goal for a while.
